Event Information

The Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon is a certified 13.1 mile course and ranked as one of the most scenic in the country by Runner’s World. This race has been selected as Road Race of the Year by the Road Runners Club of America.

The 5K is a fast, downhill 3.1 mile course certified by USA Track & Field. As in past years, the 5K will start at the same time and from the same start line as the half marathon. A block away from the half marathon finish, the 5K finish line will be followed by the ‘5K Fun Zone’ that will lead runners and walkers into the Kaiser Permanente post-race expo.

The race is limited to 10,000 participants.

  • Sorry. No Race Day Registration; must be pre-registered  Registration fees are non-refundable.

Start/Finish

  • Start time is at 8:00 am for both the Half Marathon and 5K.
  • The starting gate is at John F. Kennedy Drive east of Stow Lake Drive, and will be open for 10 minutes. All runners/walkers must start by 8:10 am.

Pre Race Shuttles to the Start Area

  • Depart from 6:15 am–7:15 am
  • from the corner of Fulton Street and the Great Highway
  • from the bus stop on the Great Highway above the Cliff House

Post-Race Shuttles

  • Depart from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm
  • from the corner of Fulton Street and the Great Highway
  • returning participants to the start area for the Concourse Underground Garage and to the parking lots above the Cliff House

  Getting There

  • Public transportation, car pooling and biking are recommended as parking is limited.
  • For Public Transportation use 511.org to find the best option from your location.
  • Note that most roads in Golden Gate Park will be closed to traffic and no parking will be allowed along the course route.

  Bicycle Parking

  • Open from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM
  • SF Bicycle Coalition and Pamakids will have a courtesy bike corral located inside Golden Gate Park on 47th Ave. off of Fulton.  
  • The bus shuttle to the starting line is approx. 3 blocks from this location. 
  • All bikes must be claimed by 12:30 PM.

Parking

  • Free parking lot at the Great Highway; take shuttles to the start area
  • Paid parking lot near the start at the Concourse Underground Garage, enter via tunnel from Fulton Street at 10th Avenue, post-race shuttle drops participants at Fulton & 8th Avenue.
  • All parking noted above is limited so arrive early if driving.
  • Most roads in Golden Gate Park will be closed to traffic and no parking is allowed along the course route.

Will Call/Packet Pick-Up

  • If you do not choose to have your race packet mailed back to you during the registration process or if you do not receive your race packet you will need to pick it up Race Morning between 6:30 am -  7:45 am at the Will Call Tent located in the start area on John F. Kennedy Drive near Stow Lake Drive.

Race Awards/Divisions

  • Half Marathon awards will be given to the top three finishers in the following age divisons: 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85 and over.
  • 5K awards will be given to the top three finisher in the following age divisions  6-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85 and over.
  • Additionally, awards will be given to the top three overall finishers in the Physically Challenged Athlete Division, which requires pre-registration and PC Athletes will be excluded from age group division awards.

The Courses

  • Both the 5K & 1/2 marathon start at the same locations and are point to point with a net loss in altitude from the east end of Golden Gate Park to the far west end.
  • The 5K is a fast, downhill 3.1 mile course newly certified by USA Track & Field. The 5K finish line will be followed by the ‘5K Fun Zone’ that will lead runners and walkers into the Kaiser Permanente health expo.
  • The 1/2 Marathon course will take runners out around the panhandle, back through Golden Gate Park, out and back on the Great Highway and finishes at the entrance to the Kaiser Permanente health expo.
  • After 11AM, half marathon participants still on the course will be moved to the pedestrian pathway to finish the course (the finish line is open until 12:00 Noon).

The Finish Lines – both in the southwest corner of Golden Gate Park:

  • Half Marathon Finish: on Bernice Rodgers Way, near Martin Luther King Drive.
  • 5K Finish: On Martin Luther King Drive, a block away from the half marathon finish, the 5K finish line will be followed by the ‘5K Fun Zone’ that will lead runners and walkers into the Kaiser Permanente health expo.

Course Support

  • Water at the start and at seven points on the half marathon course and at the finish.
  • Electrolytes will be served at Mile 6, 8.4 and 11.2.
  • Split times are called out at each mile and many course monitors are on the routes.
  • Medical Support will be available at the start, on the course, at the finish lines and in the expo.
